Haircut

Mason came to town yesterday to get his haircut. We live in the middle of freaking nowhere. We have to drive 15 miles to do anything. Except, if we want to get gas, we can go to Gooch’s. Gooch’s is around the corner from us, it’s an old grocery. Really old. I asked Old Dude behind the counter how long Gooch’s has been around and he said since 1945. Then, I asked if it had always been in the family, and the Old Dude responded, “Yeah, my daddy had it before me.” Old Dude is probably in his late seventies and he still calls his father, “Daddy.” It is definitely the South. So, I got home from my  visit down through the history of Granville County and Googled the name, Gooch. Turns out, they’ve been in these parts since the middle 1700s. I read one of the Gooch’s wills online where he bequeathed all of his negroes, and land, to his children.

Anyway, so the haircut. Mason got his haircut. He’s damn cute.

Colleen dropped off Violet at my work while the haircut was performed on Mason. She hung out with me for a good hour. At one point, we walked down this path to my desk, well populated with other cubes, and in a voice that was loud enough for others to hear, Violet says, “You’re the best dad ever.” I am becoming well aware that Violet is learning the art of manipulation, and this took the cake. It was so blatantly obvious she said that not only for my benefit, but for the benefit of all that were around me.

Along those same lines… I had Colleen buy me my own copy of the Knot, so I could do a little research on the wedding photographers in the area. I wanted to look at the magazine Sunday during the day while Violet was awake. You are not normally allowed to read magazines during the time that the children are awake. The only exception to that rule is if you do it in a way that they think you are showing them the magazine. So, I sat down and said, “Violet, do you want to look at the pretty pictures in this magazine with me?” She fell for it. So, I flip to the first picture, it’s a picture of an engagement ring. Violet says, “Wow. That’s a pretty ring. Will you get me that, daddy?”
